Following the surgery, the author experiences a nine-day blackout, during which he enters a state of amnesia, with no memory of his hospital stay or surgery. Memories of thirst and attempts to find water contrast with his physical condition. Recovery begins on June 11, when the author regains consciousness, realizes the need to communicate with loved ones, and finds his phone with the help of a concierge.
